Born out of the necessity of a seasonal retreat for self-styled “Carpet-Baggers” from
New England
’s banking industry, this Big House and Carriage House compound is designed in a decidedly Southern rural farm-house vernacular.
The Southern-crafted proportions are heavy, and the details are overtly simplistic, keeping true to the theme of turn of the century American farm structures. The Big House is composed of a central gallery leading from the double door entry through to the great room and the marshes of the
Colleton
River
beyond. The Carriage House apartment and music studios complement the children’s budding performing careers. While an oversized Southern screened porch, summer kitchen, cabaña and heated pool/spa extend the owner’s visitation during the “balmy” fall and winter seasons of the Low Country.
Exterior material selections have blended the owner’s sense of place ranging from the
New England
stack stone walls splayed to accentuate the home’s historic roots of rusticated foundations while juxtaposed against the typical Southern farm house, white-washed, with rough-sawn cypress board and battens.
